BUMHS was conceived in 2004. Thus began the initial process of establishing it. However, it could not be implemented until 2017 when the Bolan University of Medical and Health Sciences Bill 2017 was passed by the Balochistan Provincial Assembly on December 11, 2017. Achakzai on December 20, 2017. The notification of BUMHS was issued on December 22, 2017, while it was published in the Balochistan Gazette in March 2018. Prof. Dr. Naqibullah Achakzai has been appointed as the first Vice-Chancellor of Bolan University of Medical and Health Sciences, Quetta. On August 1, 2018.

The University of Medical and Health Sciences is the first and only university in Balochistan to be responsible for admitting students to MBBS and BDS programs. Bolan Medical University offers studies in Medicine, Psychology, Surgery, Hematology, Neurosurgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Ophthalmology, Otorhinolaryngology, and Pediatrics from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan. Bolan Medical College and its Dental Section, as well as other public sector medical colleges in Balochistan Province, are affiliated / consultants to BUMHS.

The college was established in 1972 by the then Education Minister Mir Gul Khan Nasir during the rule of Ataullah Mengal. Both belonged to the National Awami Party and have graduated more than 2,900 students. c. 2003) was the recipient of a 488 million yen grant from the Japan International Cooperation Agency in 1995.
